Running long distances
Being a marathon runner requires a lot of discipline, heart, focus and desire. I only really started running during the Fall of 2008...on a dare. Being a race walker for a few years, I never dreamed of actually running a 21k race. I did and it felt great. I ran three more 21k races since then. Every day when I train, I have a rough idea of how far I will run. Sometimes I just throw caution to the wind and "treat" myself to an extra 10k over and above my planned distance. This is not easy to do but it is rewarding. When you consider that I may run 25-32k instead of 10-15, you really have to push yourself to actually fiinish intact. When you do a 42k marathon you had better be prepared for what may happen. Doing at least one long run a week seems fine by me.
Remembering Paul Harvey
Having been in the radio business for many years, I always appreciate listening to a great voice. Paul Harvey was one of a kind. His ability to tell a story in under four minutes was akin to someone like Louis Armstrong recording a classic in the same amount of time. Paul’s delivery was impeccable. His use of silence and space reminds me of the way that Thelonious Monk used space in his music. The listener eagerly awaiting who the story was about would have to wait until the end of the story to find out. Brilliant! When it came to jazz and popular music, Paul had many stories to tell. There is a great photo on Paul’s web site showing him with his wife and a very young Paul Harvey Jr. all sitting at their respective typewriters doing what they do best, Paul Sr. mentoring the younger Paul to a future and promising career in radio.
